I have gone out of my way to try and forget that morning, but much like my parents and the defining day in their generation (Pearl Harbor) it will be with me forever. That morning I was in bed when the telephone rang around 7:30 AM. My friend Dwight Schultz was on the other end, and I was groggy from sleep and didn't quite Grok what he was telling me. He kept screaming to turn on the TV, turn on the TV! I jumped out of bed and went to the living room and turned it on to be confronted by huge black clouds of smoke rolling out of the Twin Towers. Now, I have been in tense situations many times in my life, when I was a young soldier in Viet Nam, when I was a Police Officer dealing with situations that had to be handled right there .. right now. But what I was looking at on the television so many thousands of miles away, well .. I felt totally helpless. It hit me ... my God! We are at War! With who? Jesus, with Who? Some days later, and I am not too sure how many days, Dwight was working on a television job (he is an actor) when he called me again. He was really upset because of a chat he just had with a female producer on the production. He was still dealing with his feelings and his reaction to what was going on, and happened to speak to this woman about his feelings. She turned to him and in effect told him she couldn't relate to it, she felt uninvolved. This outraged him, after all ... about 3,000 of our fellow citizens were dead! I remembered my parents telling me how the country came together ... and stayed together for the next four years after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. We were one people pulling together to defeat the forces that attacked us and plunged the world into a global war. And today? Hell, as hard as it is for me to believe there are those out there that are convinced that George Bush and the secret government were the attackers. That it was impossible for the Towers to collapse after being hit by those airliners. That a missile hit the Pentagon, not an airliner. That NASA filmed the manned Moon landing on a Disney Sound Stage and not the Moon. Jesus Christ!?? Have we devolved that much? What happened to common sense, which for years I have maintained is not that common. I sure hope to hell that we start coming back soon, because it is just possible we don't have that much time left. You know?
